RCA Secret Exhibition: 18–26 November 2011
18 November 2011 – Leading names from the worlds of contemporary art, design, fashion and film have donated a record 2,900 postcard size artworks to the College's annual RCA Secret event, which opens today.
Artists including Tracey Emin, Anish Kapoor, Grayson Perry, Yoko Ono, Olafur Eliasson, John Baldessari, Richard Wilson, Jeremy Deller and Christo; designers Sir James Dyson and Kenneth Grange; fashion designers Sir Paul Smith, Erdem, Manolo Blahnik and Dries Van Noten and film-makers Nick Park and Mike Leigh have all produced mini masterpieces that will be up for sale at just £45.
The postcards go on display at the College (and online) from Friday 18 November. However, there is one catch, they are all exhibited anonymously so it's up to visitors to try and spot which artist has made which postcard. The event culminates in all of the postcards being sold to the public for £45 each on Saturday 26 November.
All postcards are made and donated by professional artists, designers and illustrators, plus up-and-coming students and graduates from the RCA. The event is now in its eighteenth year and has raised over £1 million for the RCA Fine Art Student Award Fund, which helps Fine Art students with bursaries towards tuition fees and _place_holder; material costs for graduate shows.
Although it can help to know the difference between a drawing by Tracey Emin and a sketch by Grayson Perry, a lot of it is down to pure luck and many collectors don’t realise whose work they have chosen until they hand over their cash on the sale day. Artists may choose to paint, draw, sketch or even imitate the work of other artists as long as it’s postcard-sized.
Potential collectors will be able to view all the postcards in person at the RCA in Kensington or on-line here from 11am on 18 November until 25 November. _place_holder; Postcards can only be bought on Saturday 26 November on a first-come, first-served basis, with no sealed bids or reservations in advance. There will be a raffle for collectors to win a position in the first 50 places in the queue.
RCA Secret 2011 is sponsored by Stewarts Law LLP.
