InnovationRCA Design Jam Set to Uncover Next Wave of MedTech Entrepreneurs

InnovationRCA has partnered with the Royal Society of Medicine and CW+, the charity for Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, to host the first ever Design Jam: Design for Health. The event, taking place from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 February, will create design solutions to major challenges in health and uncover the next generation of innovative MedTech companies.

Design Jam: Design for Health is an opportunity for talented designers, coders and graduates in business and medicine to stimulate the creation of real design solutions to challenges in healthcare. The event will develop fresh, early-stage ideas that address UK or global health challenges, whether through product, technology or service design interventions.

‘We are excited to be working together with the Royal Society of Medicine and CW+ to deliver the first ever Design Jam: Design for Health’ explained Dr Nadia Danhash, Director of InnovationRCA. ‘This event is all about collaboration and teamwork and is a wonderful opportunity for participants to meet new people, work on exciting and potentially world-changing ideas, learn how to transform ideas into reality and gain confidence. For some, this could be the beginning of an incredible entrepreneurial career.’

Individual participants will pitch initial ideas on Friday evening, then form teams of five-to-seven people to develop selected ideas into technically feasible design concepts, creating raw and early models and a market case showing initial market feasibility and the beginnings of a business model. Over the weekend there will be two masterclasses, one on Design Thinking & Service Design and another on Market Fit. Medical, design and business mentors will be present throughout the event to offer support.

On Sunday the teams will present their concepts, and winners will be selected for three cash prizes to support developing concepts. The winning teams that go on to incorporate and form companies will also be placed on a shortlist to bid for £10,000+ seed investment and incubation at InnovationRCA and have the opportunity to compete for grants of £10,000+ from CW+ to test their projects in a healthcare setting.

Discussing the event James Varley, Finance Director at CW+, said: ‘We are delighted to be the healthcare partner for the Design Jam. Together with our Trust, we are passionate about finding innovative, creative solutions to challenges our clinicians face. We are really excited to see the final designs and hope to identify solutions which could be adopted at our Trust to make a difference to our patients in our hospitals and throughout the NHS.’

Prior to the event, two provocations were held at the RCA, with health and medical experts talking about challenges in healthcare that need solutions. These challenges include pharmacists communicating complex medical instructions to patients who speak different languages, caring for patients with dementia and supporting patients managing long-term conditions. The informal and interactive events offered participants the chance to ask questions and discuss thoughts and initial ideas with the speakers and other participants, sparking ideas for development at Design Jam: Design for Health.
