HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

It is with great sadness that the Royal College of Art has learnt of the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, the College’s Royal Visitor for 50 years from 1967, the year the Royal Charter was granted by Her Majesty The Queen.

Dr Paul Thompson, Vice-Chancellor, said: “HRH The Duke of Edinburgh’s lifetime of service included an important role for the Royal College of Art. It was a great honour for us to have Prince Philip as Royal Visitor for 50 years, a position which Prince Charles took over in 2019.

"His Royal Highness always understood the importance of design. In 1959 he created The Prince Philip Designers Prize which rewarded innovation and creativity in design, and he regularly chaired the jury for the Prize. We are very grateful for his thoughtful interest in our work and support for our students.”
