SoAH Research Presents: ‘I Care By...’ (A Recital)

10 March 2021 | 6pm – 8pm

Online

Join the next event in the SoAH Research Presents series, with artist Jade Montserrat, hosted by Prof. Gemma Blackshaw and the CARE research group within School of Arts & Humanities.

To recite is to read aloud, to repeat from memory, to declaim (meaning to utter or deliver in a rhetorical or impassioned way), to narrate, and also, to allege. A recital is defined as an enumeration or listing of names, facts, events, doings – happenings to be shared, reckoned with, remembered. A recital also describes a performance of a programme of music by a soloist or small group. Both definitions depend on an audience, on witnesses, watchers, listeners.

SoAH Research Presents offers a recital by artist/soloist Jade Montserrat, a performance which invites the audience to reflect upon matters close to her heart concerning race; the vulnerabilities of bodies; the tactile, sensory, healing qualities of drawing and writing; the structuring of care within institutions; and care as a method for arts and humanities research. The performance is participatory. Audience members are invited to attend with whatever materials for drawing they have to hand, and to engage in a series of exercises which centre upon practices which Jade will encourage them to entangle, including drawing, breathing, reading, listening, writing and vocalising.

The recital will extend over 2 hours. It will include time for drawing, time for watching Jade draw, time for listening to excerpts from texts that resonate with her research, practice and experience, time for chanting and note-making, time for reflecting upon the methods by which we attempt to care, to heal and repair, in the work we do as artists and writers – methods we will recite to commit to memory, to share. Whilst no formal breaks are scheduled, audience members are encouraged to take them whenever they are required.

Registration essential.

The event will be held via Zoom Webinar. Please note the link and password will be sent to attendees via email.

Zoom is a free online App which can be downloaded to your computer/laptop, phone or tablet via www.zoom.us

Bio:

Jade Montserrat is the recipient of the Stuart Hall Foundation Scholarship which supports her PhD at IBAR, UCLan (Race and Representation in Northern Britain in the context of the Black Atlantic: A Creative Practice Project), as well as the development of her work from her black diasporic perspective in the North of England. Jade was also awarded one of two Jerwood Student Drawing Prizes in 2017 for No Need for Clothing, a documentary photograph of a drawing installation at Cooper Gallery DJCAD by Jacquetta Clark. Jade’s Rainbow Tribe project – a combination of historical and contemporary manifestations of Black Culture from the perspective of the Black Diaspora – is central to the ways she is producing a body of work, including No Need For Clothing and its iterations, as well as her performance work Revue. Jade was commissioned to present Revue as a 24 hour live performance at SPILL Festival of Performance, October 2018, a solo exhibition at The Bluecoat, Liverpool, (Nov – 10 Mar 2019) which toured to Humber Street Gallery (July-sept 2019) and was commissioned by Art on the Underground to create the 2018 Winter Night Tube cover. Iniva and Manchester Art Gallery have commissioned Jade as the first artist for the Future Collect project (2020).
