Deep within our subconscious lies an autonomous circuitry of mechanisms and ‘instincts’ triggered in peculiar situations. These instincts have been forged in response to contextual dangers over the course of our evolution.
As modern society has removed natural threats and predators, survival has shifted from physical and biological means to more psycho-social ones; from succeeding in passing on your genes to sustaining your dignity, decency and economy…
What are the new roles performed by these latent circuits today? The possibility of stimulating them artificially could lead to the pursuit of more irrational desires: Would temporary memory loss be a desirable type of vacation? Would you set up parallel lives and trick your brain to create daily mini-happenings?
