RCA School of Communication Film Seminar: Lines and Tracks

This programme of films focuses on lines: straight, curved, serpentine, circular, repetitions and spirals, formal devices that are often associated with the fantastical or with various degrees of disorientation or derangement. 

The films used include Fantasmagorie and La Cauchemar du Fantoche (Emil Cohl, 1908), Anemic Cinéma (Marcel Duchamp, 1926), the opening and title sequences of Rear Window (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960) and Vertigo (Alfred Hitchchock/Saul Bass, 1959) and The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1972), among others. 

The seminar will also focus on a brief history of circular pans, such as those from The Passenger (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1975), Weekend (Jean-Luc Godard, 1967) and Riddles of the Sphinx (Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen, 1975).
