The Royal College of Art is delighted to announce that Professor N Katherine Hayles will be giving a talk at the College. Hayles' work examines the relations of literature, science and technology in the 20th and 21st centuries, often exploring the manner in which different inscription technologies have shaped writing, reading, analysis, and creativity.Â
Her 2017 book, Unthought: The Power of the Cognitive Nonconscious, makes clear distinctions between thinking (higher consciousness) and cognition (the non-conscious capacity for processing information). Hayles shows that the broader faculty of cognition is more common than we tend to think. Not only is it extant in all biological life-forms but also many technical systems. For example, under Katherine’s model, printing technologies began to acquire cognitive capabilities with the invention of the Lumitype typesetter.Â
This talk has been organised by the School of Communication. Please email them at this address for more information.
