Experimental Relationship: In Conversation with Pixy Liao
10 March 2021 | 3pm 4.15pm
Artist Pixy Liao joins our MA Photography Students for a special conversation about life, photography and the relationship between them.
Artist Pixy Liao will join our Year One MA Photography Students for a special conversation about life, photography and the relationship between them. Liao’s work centres on an ongoing photographic project in which she collaborates with her partner to make images that challenge gender norms and explore the meanings of sexual expression. Her recent series Experimental Relationship depicts her with her boyfriend Moro as they playfully negotiate each other’s bodies in staged photographs that explore the power play of coupledom. In this event, which is been organised by the students as part of their WIP show at RCA, the conversation will focus on the process of making photograph as a reflective practice, one that blurs the boundaries between public and private, life and art.
Pixy Liao was born in Shanghai and is currently living and working in New York. She has participated in exhibitions and performances internationally, including the Rencontres d’Arles in Arles (France); Asia Society (Houston); National Gallery of Australia (Sydney); the Museum of Sex (New York); UCCA Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing). She is a recipient of NYFA Fellowship in photography, Santo Foundation Individual Artist Awards, Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival Madame Figaro Women Photographers Award, En Foco's New Works Fellowship and LensCulture Exposure Awards, etc. She has done artist residencies at Light Work, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Center for Photography at Woodstock, University of Arts London, School of Visual Arts, Pioneer Works, and Camera Club of New York.
The event will be held via Zoom Webinar. Please note the link and password will be sent to attendees via email.
Zoom is a free online App which can be downloaded to your computer/laptop, phone or tablet via www.zoom.us
This event is part of WiP2021. The RCA’s annual Work in Progress Show is an opportunity for the public to engage with the current and ongoing work of first year MA students across the College. Students share a glimpse into their working methods and thinking processes by presenting online content ranging from sketches, plans, and research, to artworks in various states of experimentation and completion.
