Design + ¬ 4 ⇒ & ∨ w/: Design & Toxicity – Susan Schuppli (Goldsmiths)
Kensington, Lecture Theatre 1
Susan Schuppli is Director and Reader of the Centre for Research Architecture, Goldsmiths, University of London where she also Board Chair of Forensic Architecture. Her work as an artist-researcher and writer explores the agency of toxic materiality and the material evidence of environmental disasters.
She documents the extreme imagery of the toxic ecologies of nuclear accidents, oil spills, and 'dark snow' in the arctic, to produce a testament of environmental injustice.
Her investigations combine scientific and technical modes of inquiry with an art-making practice, opening up new conceptual pathways to action and intervention, ethics and accountability toward the earth.
Susan has published widely within the context of media and politics and is the author of a forthcoming book, Material Witness: Forensic Media & the Production of Evidence (MIT Press).
The Design + ¬ 4 ⇒ & ∨ w/ lecture series is convened by tutors Claudia Dutson and Delfina Fantini van Ditmar for MA Design Products. It highlights design as a practice in constant negotiation with disciplinary boundaries and real-world conditions engaging urgent issues of law, toxicity, dreams, art, ethics, beings, data, time.
