Design + ¬ 4 ⇒ & ∨ w/: Design + Data Ethics – Projects by IF (David Marques & Emily Matussi)

Kensington, Lecture Theatre 1

In the third lecture in the 2019 Design Products Lecture series (Design + ¬ 4 ⇒ & ∨ w/ ), we will be joined by designers David Marques & Emily Matussi from Projects by IF to discuss design and data ethics.
Automated decisions are part of many services we use everyday, but how they work is rarely explained or understood. This matters because automated decisions have an impact at scale. These decisions made by automated systems should be transparent, explainable and accountable.
Projects by IF are a design studio and ethical data consultancy, based in London, who design, test and build services to help people exercise their digital rights. Collaborating with both academic and industry partners IF develop prototypes that can implement their findings into the way services are designed. IF explores ethical and practical ways of using uses of data in a responsible way.
The Design + ¬ 4 ⇒ & ∨ w/ lecture series is convened by tutors Claudia Dutson and Delfina Fantini van Ditmar for MA Design Products. It highlights design as a practice in constant negotiation with disciplinary boundaries and real-world conditions engaging urgent issues of law, toxicity, dreams, art, ethics, beings, data, time.
