Design X Policy is the final lecture in the 2019 Design Products series (Design + ¬ 4 ⇒ & ∨ w/) with Carlotta Conte from Dark Matter Laboratories.
Carlotta will talk about the practice of Dark Matters and the implications and impact on policy-making and system change projects - from innovative financing strategies for equitable urban development to transforming how we approach childcare with the #RadicalChildcare initiative.
Dark Matter Laboratories utilises an experimental method typical of a fieldwork scientific laboratory, undertaking real-world research and prototyping researching and developing new support frameworks for collaborative system change. Dark Matter Lab’s work is focused on the democratisation of our cities and regions and co-designing the institutional infrastructure for good growth and systems change.
Dark Matter Laboratories have been working on a range of initiatives from Impact funds, to @Town_halls for Social Innovation, to the development of a new generation of Polytechnics, and the transformation of numerous existing institutions. Carlotta Conte is an urban researcher and system designer trained as an architect at the Architectural Association and at the CASS.
The Design + ¬ 4 ⇒ & ∨ w/ lecture series is convened by tutors Claudia Dutson and Delfina Fantini van Ditmar for MA Design Products. It highlights design as a practice in constant negotiation with disciplinary boundaries and real-world conditions engaging urgent issues of law, toxicity, dreams, art, ethics, beings, data, time.
