The Great Exhibition Road Festival 2019: Anna Talvi – A Tailored Approach to a New Spacesuit

29 June 2019 | 2pm – 2.45pm

Ondaatje Lecture Theatre, Royal Geographical Society, 1 Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AR

As space habitation develops, the objective is shifting from keeping astronauts alive to optimising their experience. The need for human-centered design values is being realised 100 kilometres above our heads. This need comes into sharper focus as the nature of astronauts is becoming more diverse. The emerging private space industry is finding ways for those who can afford it to buy a trip on orbit, bypassing years of mental and physical training and preparation. At the same time, average mission times for professional astronauts are increasing as space agencies prepare Moon bases and journeys to Mars. The changes in human physiology and psychology that happen in microgravity are complex and yet to be fully understood.

Anna Talvi (MA Fashion Menswear, 2018) is a designer-researcher trying to tackle those issues through developing clothing created for life in zero gravity. From severe bone-loss and muscle atrophy to earthly comfort and well-being, design thinking can offer new methodologies to address those issues from a human-centred perspective. Anna's MA project ‘An Optimal Set of Exomembranes for Prolonged Stay in Microgravity Environments’ proposed a holistic approach targeting the physiological and psychological changes one experiences when living in space. This interdisciplinary project was informed by her previous education in science (mathematics, physics and biology) and experience in equestrian sports physiology.

This event is part of The Great Exhibition Road Festival 2019. Festival activities will take place on and around Exhibition Road on Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 June, 11am – 5pm. There will also be a range of events on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings; please see the festival programme for full details.
