Åsa Johannesson is a London-based fine artist working with photography. Her practice centres on the relationship between the terms queer and the photograph. The exhibition The Queering of Photography brings together works produced during Åsa’s PhD at the Royal College of Art (2016–19). Produced through experimentations using a large format camera and partly developed through a research residency at the British School at Rome, this show seeks to relocate queer from identity to photographic ontology. Comprised of portraits of humans, of Roman statues, and of the fabric backdrop used throughout the research project, The Queering of Photography seeks a new articulation of queer in the context of photography that stresses the material-poetic and spatio-temporal sensibility of the photographic image.
Recent exhibitions include Entanglement: the Opera, Royal College of Art (2019), Looking Out, Looking In, Tbilisi Photography Festival, Georgia (2018), and The Boy & The Twins, Gothenburg Biennial Extended (2013).
Private view: 21 October, 6–9pm
