Biography
-
Having studied at Falmouth College of Arts and University of Brighton Simon worked at Graphic Thought Facility for five years. Seeking to build on his experience of print, and develop his interests in material, environment, product and design for self-sufficiency, he studied Design Products at the Royal College of Art under Tord Boontje and Postler Ferguson.
Show moreSimon approaches solutions for independent living as minimal interventions that give credit to the innate creativity and capability he believes we all have, addressing the emotional and practical. He is also interested in the dissemination of design-insight to the public, public-facing bodies and designers to improve understanding.
Simon's graduation project of kitchenware The Leaven Range amplifies feedback inherent in a task giving subtle sensory feedback to its user, such as temperature, mass or sound.
Hand Healthy is the project Simon is currently working on as a Research Associate at the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design. This project, a campaign for Arthritis Research UK, looks at how older people with osteo-arthritis use the kitchen, drawing insights from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds and developing a range of therapeutic design innovations by encouraging a ‘hand healthy’ attitude to life.
