James Russell is one of three Technical Services Managers at the Royal College of Art, he heads up the 3D Making & Print resources and is responsible for the strategic and operational delivery of Design & Creative 3D Making workshops and Print.
3D Making includes: Wood workshops, Metal Fabrication & Engineering, Foundry, Resin & Silicone moulding, Plastics Workshops, Digitally aided making – Plasma/Laser cutting and Subtractive manufacturing (CNC milling).
Print includes: Print on Demand large format Digital print labs, Student facing large format digital print and Printmaking resources – Etching, lithography, Intaglio, screenprinting and letterpress.
James joined the RCA in 2009, undertaking roles including CAD Advisor & 3D Printing Technician, Technical Coordinator Digital Aided Making and Technical Coordinator 3D Making before taking up his post as Technical Services Manager 3D Making & Print in 2016.

Biography

Before joining the RCA in 2009 James worked as a Technician Tutor at The Arts University Bournemouth supporting BA Model Making, Product Design & Interior Design. Developing the workshop Digital Manufacturing Centre including CNC machining, Laser cutting & 3D printing alongside CAD software teaching and student project support.
Show moreJames studied Computer aided Design for Manufacturing and began his career in Product & Packaging Design.
Outside of the RCA James has enjoyed success in motorsport, racing production cars across Europe as a race driver and then managing a race winning team. James still maintains a keen interest in all motorsport, racing in various championships.  Â
