Our oceans are in crisis. For every 100 cubic metres of salt water, there are 60 plastic items to one biomass. Autopsies show the impact on marine life: their stomachs are full of plastic. They die full but without nourishment. Our Vast and Troubled Ocean is a ‘travelogue’, following the trail of plastic from India to the Arctic, based on the designer’s own research. It speculates on how we will respond to the proliferation of plastic in our oceans. Among the scenarios is an illegal fish-‘cleaning’ factory – the economy of toxic marine shanty towns. There is no purity in fish, only grades of bad, worse and worst.
