The RCA Experience

Students come to the Royal College of Art, the world’s only wholly postgraduate art and design school, because they are ‘besotted’. They come to push the parameters of their practice and to pursue their dreams.

Having already excelled at undergraduate level, their mission is to surpass themselves, becoming highly skilled masters and creative, critical thinkers. The RCA’s mix of professionalism and creative freedom, together with its renowned academic community and rigorous academic framework provide the conditions in which students flourish and achieve their highest potential.

A Unique Creative Education

The Royal College of Art is often described as ‘design in an art environment, and art in a design environment’. This makes for a two-way street, producing synergies between the two. Students, already accomplished in their fields, are taught by practitioners with the support of highly skilled technicians. There is a sense of everyone working together.

The World’s Most Concentrated Creative Network

RCA students’ enterprise and dedication is nurtured in a professional environment. Academic staff devote their time to students, meaning our emerging artists and designers have vital industry grounding and opportunity to build their professional networks. Over the years, experimental student-led initiatives, supported by the College, have developed into seminal movements – a testament to the RCA’s ‘creative laboratory’ nature. The strength of this creative and intellectual community has led to both lasting friendships and enduring professional collaboration. These are networks that continue for the rest of students‘ professional lives.

A Two-Year Master’s

Royal College of Art students not only achieve technical mastery of their practice, supported by highly skilled specialist technicians, but develop their critical and intellectual abilities. This combination of intense practice and rigorous research is why a Master’s at the RCA is a two-year programme.
