Hollow in the Ground

Hollow in the Ground

Underground space provides a unique opportunity to democratise the senses, giving them equal status in our perception of the world.  By deliberately compromising what inhabitants see the aim is to ‘awaken’ their other senses. The project points towards the validity of interior design as the most appropriate discourse and practice through which to encounter all subterranean environments.

Multi-sensual perception and materiality begin to lay out a new way of thinking about the subject of the subterranean. Explorations of the sensorial relationship to the subterranean space where odour, sound and touch are all accentuated and the dominance of vision reduced underpins the design decisions.  The unusual underground typology combines the notion of home with a sense of physical containment, security and intimacy to allow a new mode of living.

A group called the 'Preppers' inhabit an underground shelter. It provides them with the opportunity to prepare and take charge of their future in this world that appears to be, not so slowly, trudging towards events that could dramatically affect our lives for generations.

    MA Interior Design, 2014

  • In 'real' life, I wish to infuse spaces with sensual stimulus and for people to engage all their senses while experiencing the environment. The stories, which inhabit the interior spaces, are multi sensual, giving us information beyond visual appearances. With my projects I tried to touch upon this notion, experimenting with smell and tactility.

Connecting with the narrative of the space and conceptual thinking behind the design scheme is important to me. Putting my heart into the work is what will fulfill my life.

I will strive to continue to be a good listener and an empathetic person, acting upon advice and having the capacity to transform my critical understanding. Being perceptive and sympathetic will help me identify the suitable solutions to design problems.

A glimpse back at my last five years would reveal a relentless quest to become an exceptional designer. Middlesex University and the Royal College of Art have directed me into intellectual questioning of design whilst I have also had a brief exposure to the practicalities of the real-life experience during my studies.

With the completion of my MA at the RCA, my journey does not stop, it moves forward with excitement. I look forward to developing new ideas and learning so much more in an exciting work environment.
