Stereoscopic Spatiality: A Practice-based Investigation into the Use of Stereoscopic 3D‐Depth Technologies in Physical and Digital Space
Hugo Glover is an MPhil/PhD Candidate in Innovation Design Engineering (IDE) at the Royal College of Art. His research focuses on the creative exploration of stereoscopic 3D space through the use of digital stereoscopes, which house experimental CGI animation. By creating a physical space, as well as a digital stereoscopic space, Hugo’s work explores the hinterland of these two realities.
The aim of this research is to explore the theoretical and practical dimensions of stereoscopic spatiality through a mixed methodology that centres on a practice-based approach. The initial driving questions behind the study are:
- In what contexts and capacities has spatiality (perceived depth) through stereopsis been utilised as stereoscopic imaging technology has evolved
- What areas of commonality are there between stereoscopic depth and other areas of volumetric craft such as industrial design, ceramics and architecture?
- How can the combination of stereoscopic animated content and a referential physical volume create new insight into relationships between humans, digital animation and reality?
- What knowledge can be gained from creating both animation and bespoke stereoscopic viewing systems as a co-existing assemblage of techniques?

Hugo Glover completed his BA (Hons) in Industrial Design with Applied Technologies at Sheffield Hallam University (1997–2000), before going on to study MA Design Products at the Royal College of Art. In 2000, was awarded the RSA Masters Medal. He began his career in animation at the BBC and established an experimental animation company, Peculiar, in 2006. He has also worked with clients on digital film restoration, television commercials and advertising. Hugo currently lectures in animation at Northumbria University, Newcastle.
