MA work
My interest lies in working with materials and processes in unusual, often overlooked ways. This can be seen in my work with waste stone from quarrying and stone masonry. Although humans have worked stone for millennia, until now we have disregarded stone waste.
The 'Lava Glass' project investigates applications for waste powdered stone. By heating granite waste I can produce an artificial version of obsidian, which is natural volcanic glass. Where mixed stone sources are found they can be fired to a form of ceramic without additives. Each mixed stone source bears the chemical fingerprint of the quarry from which they are taken.
