Between Stone and Shine

The project questions the lifespans of institutions and architecture, their inherent cycles of legitimacy and the spatial implications of altering this. The study is based on a critique of the long lasting 'time immemorial' life span of British institutions the City of London Corporation and more specifically its relationship to the London Guilds who are both separate yet complicit in their affect on the everyday lives of Londoners and residents of the UK.

The project reimagines and relocates their distant philanthropy and charity back into the City, proposing a temporary school hosted within each livery hall every five years. Subversive disturbances to the buildings provide new access to facilitate at the school and physically opens up the closed halls to form new routes through the city. As once the lanes, streets and alleys facilitated the flow of money, the school will bring forth a new network for knowledge.
