Space Explorations: Work in Progress workshop
For Space Explorations, Vesta Kroese (Sculpture) worked with young people from Villiers High School and Woolwich Polytechnic. Her workshop began with a visit to the Work in Progress exhibition. The visit sparked discussions about notions of place and non-place, and a consideration of scale in the city, in buildings, in rooms and in the body.
Vesta encouraged the students to regard the building as a ‘sense machine’, an active architect of our movement, field of vision and connection to the environment beyond. The group explored the workshop space with all their senses; then they shared experiences and made comparisons. Each student constructed their own ‘looking device’, trying several versions of their experimental object. Finally, they worked in groups to make a collective ‘sensing machine’, merging and developing their individual pieces.
