    A (Different) Dictionary of Architecture

  • This 3-hour workshop subverted formal perceptions of architecture by taking images used to define the topic in The Penguin Dictionary of Architecture and distorting their scale and meaning.

Pupils made a selection of models using a limited palette of these distorted illustrations and a selection of objects they could imagine becoming buildings. They applied the completed pieces to a large-scale model of a familiar site so they could see the impact of their combined projects when placed together.

The positive outcomes of misinterpretation and playing with rules rather than under them developed pupils’ perception of architecture and demonstrating how individuals can contribute practically and theoretically to the environment around them.

ReachOutRCA has given me an extraordinary opportunity to communicate my research to a differently informed group. I… feel privileged to be given the opportunity and support to influence young people in the work I am doing, and give them a fresh experience which is mutually productive.. ReachOutRCA has provided an extremely thorough and sensitive framework to work within, and has kept an open mind towards whatever suggestions I have had.
