  • Helen Hamlyn Design Awards 2012 – Focus On Ageing Population

The sprawl of large cities in 2020, increasing millions of inhabitants travelling within them, and a growing number of immobile elderly people formed the starting point for Vehicle Design graduate’s Niels van Roij’s inner-city vehicle.

Niels’ car is aimed at city commuting and short distances, though it isn’t confined to this. The inclusively-designed and adjustable interior – the dashboard can be brought closer for example – can be used by many different people, regardless of age, physique or gender, while the basic design can be adjusted at the dealer.

Professor James Goodwin of Age UK, and one of the awards judges, says, ‘The designer is to be congratulated for developing a concept with high mainstream potential. It addresses the needs of older drivers for whom this activity of daily living is indispensible.’
