‘Home Grown’ is a classroom furniture system for primary and secondary schools in developing countries and areas of high unemployment. This project is about a shift in the way we think about classrooms, materials, production and community; it’s about producing the things we need right here right now. ‘Home Grown’ combines local materials and products with basic production processes and community makers. While ‘Home Grown’ is about classroom furniture it is equally about creating sustainable social and economic solutions. ‘Home Grown’ explores community-based production as a decentralised manufacturing system while providing a range of employment opportunities within the community.

‘Home Grown’ is aimed at low-cost private schools. It offers greater planning flexibility that supports evolving learning and teaching styles. It can be used both indoors and outdoors so when classes overflow, classrooms can be moved anywhere. The product line consists of a range of task-oriented seating, desks, tables, storage and multipurpose seating, some even offer canopies for shade; the sizes support students, teachers and staff. ‘Home Grown’ is designed to work in a multitude of spaces which include classrooms, libraries, canteens, social areas, reception and outdoor spaces; and both the task chairs and desks are stackable.
