Jane Alexander, Pro-Rector (Operations), received the award on behalf of the College. Accepting the award from Deborah Huff from Jobcentre Plus, the Pro-Rector reaffirmed the College’s commitment to providing equal access in recruitment and staff development to those staff declaring a disability.
'This is a really important moment for the College', Alexander said. 'In making commitments regarding recruitment, training, retention, consultation and disability awareness, we are signalling that we are positive about disability within our own RCA community as well as to the wider world.'
The five commitments are as follows:
-
to interview all disabled applicants who meet the minimum criteria for a job vacancy and to consider them on their abilities;
- to discuss with disabled employees, at any time but at least once a year as part of the appraisal process, what both parties can do to make sure disabled employees can develop and use their abilities;
- to make every effort when employees become disabled to make sure they stay in employment;
- to take action to ensure that all employees develop the appropriate level of disability awareness needed to make these commitments work; and
- to review these commitments each year and assess what has been achieved, plan ways to improve on them and let staff and Jobcentre Plus know about progress and future plans.
The College’s participation in the scheme is also communicated by the ‘two ticks’ logo on advertisements and recruitment information.
