  • Hilary French

    Research

  • Hilary French’s research work concerns the architecture of housing. Historical essays have looked at the establishment of the apartment block as a building type and proposals for alternatives to family dwellings, and contemporary case studies have looked at current innovations and the potential for further development of these blocks as high-density urban housing. Published work, essays, and edited and authored books include New Urban Housing (2006, 2009), Key Urban Housing of the Twentieth Century (2008), Accommodating Change: Innovation in Housing (2002) and Living Together in Impossible Worlds (2001). She is also a contributing author to The Phaidon Atlas of 20th Century Architecture (forthcoming, 2012). Recent conference contributions include The Future of the European Dwelling (Barcelona, 2009) and Spaces of History / Histories of Space (Berkeley, California, 2010).
