Renate Stauss is a lecturer in Cultural Studies and Fashion Theory & History at the Royal College of Art, the University of the Arts London and the International University of Art for Fashion – ESMOD Berlin. The emphasis in her writing and teaching lies in the sociology and politics of fashion and dress, covering subjects as varied as the relationship between fashion and socialism, identity aspects of dress, globalisation and sustainability of the fashion and textiles industries, or the sensory significance of dress. She is currently completing her PhD on working with dress on concepts of self in therapeutic settings.
Renate Stauss joined the Royal College of Art in 2004. She is a graduate of Goldsmiths College (MA Communication, Culture and Society) and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (BA Fashion Communication). She is an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design (BA Fashion History and Theory) and the International University of Art for Fashion – ESMOD Berlin (MA Sustainability in Fashion), and her teaching subjects include cultural studies, fashion theory and twentieth-century fashion and cultural history, with a particular emphasis on the sociology and politics of fashion and dress.
Renate Stauss has written on fashion history and theory in a number of contexts. Recent research projects have included the role of dress and fashion in the former German Democratic Republic, differences in dress behaviour and identity between former East and West Germany, globalisation and sustainability of the fashion and textiles industries, and the sensory significance of dress.
She previously worked as deputy editor of PAYE & MOD at Arts Publishing International and was the co-convenor of the UAL Postgraduate Fashion Research Group. In 2007 she completed a postgraduate certificate in Learning & Teaching in Art, Design & Communication at the Centre for Learning and Teaching in Art and Design (cltad), University of the Arts London.
