    Open Days

Open Days are held at the College between October and January of each academic year, to enable applicants to explore teaching programmes and meet staff and students.

The School of Fine Art comprises four programmes that are defined by subject: Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture. Each programme aims to engage with the specific discourse of the discipline – its practices, histories and theories; proposes an in-depth study as well as an ongoing questioning of its defining boundaries; and aims to facilitate cross-disciplinary practices and experimentation. The postgraduate level and status of the RCA in art and design education means the College is able to attract highly talented students from around the globe, from diverse backgrounds with a broad range of ideas, opinions, ambitions and skills. This plurality is welcomed across the College and is fully reflected in the School of Fine Art.

The School has an overarching role, encouraging and enabling students to engage with issues and practices that run across fine art. It convenes talks by artists, critics and cultural producers, providing an exciting climate of cross-disciplinary debate and information on contemporary cultural themes and issues. The School of Fine Art also includes the Moving Image Studio, which provides academic and technical support for students within the four programmes working with film, video and lens-based installations. The Drawing Studio offers college-wide workshops and lectures. Fine Art visiting professors and tutors reach out to students in all Fine Art programmes, and currently include internationally acclaimed and renowned artists and theoreticians such as Yinka Shonibare, Joan Jonas and Alexander García Düttmann. A newly established school-wide lecture series addresses modes of contemporary artistic production.

Research is a key area in the School of Fine Art. MPhil and PhD students contribute to a school-wide research seminar, presenting their studio work and papers regularly to the seminar group. The Image and Language Research Hub frequently convenes seminars and colloquia on art, philosophy, literature, theory and criticism. It proposes and promotes innovative approaches to the image, writing and questions of representation.

School of Fine Art MA Pathways

The School of Fine Art offers a specific focus on Moving Image and Performance under the umbrella of existing programmes. In 2013/14 the School of Fine Art will establish a new stream in which students from across the four Fine Art programmes will be selected to form a bespoke cohort engaged in Moving Image (film, video, screen-based media) and Performative Practices.

If you are interested in either the Moving Image or Performative pathways please can you clearly specify this on your application form in your personal statement.
