The programme welcomes research applicants.
The number of research students fluctuates, being
generally around ten per cent of the whole cohort and mainly
full-time. Research students' studies are supported by programme-based
and external supervisors, according to the specific
requirements of their topics. Four members of staff are
experienced in the supervision of research students, and in some cases supervision is conducted with external collaborators.

GSM&J is redefining its research strategy and folio of research themes with a stronger emphasis on supporting national and international collaborative PhDs. Recent areas of research at either MPhil or PhD levels have explored themes such as:
