This project explores the use of mass customisation as a design tool that enables the user to justify the environmental impact of a product purchase.
Environmentally conscious design tends to link the consumer to downstream consequences of products, such as operational efficiency and disposal, as opposed to the upstream social and environmental consequences of actually making the product.
Through engaging the user in the design and manufacture process and providing instant feedback relating to product choices, it is possible to observe the ‘pain and gain’ that a user experiences with respect to function, aesthetic and perceived quality against sustainable output.
