If only our material choices had limited consequences, then I would design whatever I wanted, indulge in form and utility or create the spectacular. But they do have consequences, sometimes more complex than it is really possible to gauge. I am trying to understand and respond to this, and it is in such a precarious position that I find myself as a designer.
Recently I have been exploring the realm of ‘Open Design’, with its potential to re-empower consumers and transform them into critical self-producers, so that they can ask questions and seek solutions to what is sustainable.
