Since 2008, Angela McShane has co-convened the ESRC funded international, interdisciplinary network: 'Intoxicants and Intoxication in Historical and Cultural Perspective' with ESRC Fellow Dr Phil Withington (Christ's College, Cambridge). The aim of the project is to locate this important social topic across time, space and intellectual disciplines. The network held three workshops at the V&A and a three day conference at Cambridge – there are further events planned and several edited volumes to emerge from the project. History of Design and other material disciplines have opened up a new field which is proving exceptionally beneficial to the study of this important topic. In order to develop this work into a major research project the network also co-organised a European Science Funded international and interdisciplinary workshop entitled 'The Historical Formation of European Drinking Cultures: Regions, Approaches, Sources' in Venice with Dr Phil Withington and Professor Beat Kumin (Warwick).
Since 2007 Angela McShane has been working on 'Bed and Bord' with Dr Joanne Bailey (Oxford Brookes University). They have delivered papers in several venues including Economic History Society, V&A Quilts Conference and as keynote speakers for the Holloway 'Body in the Bed' Series. They plan to develop this research interest in collaboration with AHRC Research Fellow Sasha Handley (Northumbria University) and V&A curator Sue Prichard.
As part of an interest in women and the material practice of writing in early modern England, Angela is currently working with Elizabeth Eger (Kings College, London) on a symposium project to bring together interested scholars.
