    Current and Recent Projects

  • StudioLab (2011–13): Aims to create a new European platform for creative interactions between art and science. The project will bring together major players in scientific research with centres of excellence in the arts and experimental design including Le Laboratoire (Paris), Science Gallery (Trinity College Dublin), Royal College of Art (London), Ars Electronica (Linz) and MediaLab Prado (Madrid). The project will involve activities along three key dimensions: incubation of art–science projects, education and public engagement. The project is funded by the EU and will run from January 2011 to December 2013.

What If … Exhibition (2010–11): Designed and curated by Dunne & Raby, Wellcome Trust Windows, London, January 2010 – February 2011.

Between Reality and the Impossible (2010): This project consists of a nine design proposals presented through models, photographic scenarios, videos and 3D texts. It is also an experiment in how to exhibit conceptual design proposals where the narrative and ideas are as important as the designs. Everything is treated as an object, including texts and images. Dunne & Raby worked with writer Alex Burrett and photographer Jason Evans to develop scenarios based on the design proposals.

EPSRC Impact! Project (2010): Dunne & Raby worked with the EPSRC during 2009–10 developing 16 design projects with scientists researching topics spanning renewable energy devices and security technologies to the emerging fields of synthetic biology and quantum computing. The project culminated in the EPSRC IMPACT! exhibition in March 2010.

A/B (2009–): This project is a combination of essays, interviews and design projects exploring critical design in relation to futures methodologies and the social, cultural and ethical implications of emerging fields of research and experimentation such as neuroscience and synthetic biology. The outcome will be a book.

What If … Exhibition (2009): Curated by Dunne & Raby, Science Gallery, Dublin, Ireland. Dunne & Raby collaborated with the Science Gallery on What If... exploring ways to exhibit and present 30 projects exploring interconnections between science, design and futures.

Designs for an Overpopulated Planet, No. 1: Foragers (2009): Commissioned by Design Indaba as part of the Protofarm 2050 project for the ICSID World Design Congress in Singapore. The purpose was to produce a piece of work that would spark debate about the future of farming and food production.
