Stuart Croft is an artist–filmmaker. His practice investigates the relationship between art and cinema, asking what the possibilities are for co-opting languages of the cinematic into the context of the contemporary art space.
Stuart Croft is tutor in Moving Image in the School of Fine Art at the Royal College of Art. In 2009 he established the Moving Image Studio, a new centre for film and video in the School of Fine Art. The Moving Image Studio is designed to cater for the increased prominence of the discipline in the School of Fine Art and across the College.
Stuart Croft (b. 1970) studied Fine Art at Newcastle Polytechnic, Dublin NCAD and Wimbledon School of Art, completing his studies with an MA at Chelsea College of Art and Design in 1998.
Croft’s work has been shown in public and commercial galleries in over 20 countries to date. Various institutions have held retrospective screenings of his work, including FACT, Liverpool (2007); Galleria Civica di Modena, Italy (2008); and M KHA, Antwerp (2009). He has recently shown in group exhibitions at Kunsthalle Luzern, Switzerland; Royal Academy of Arts, London; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; PS1/MoMA, New York; Site Gallery, Sheffield, and most recently in the Beijing 798 Biennale. His work has been regularly reviewed in Artforum; Art Monthly; The Guardian; Time Out; Contemporary; Art Review; NY Arts; and many other publications.
Croft has received funding awards from Arts Council England (1996, 2002 and 2006), RCA Research Development Fund (2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009) and Arts and Humanities Research Council (2009), as well as major commissions from commercial galleries and other bodies.
