  • Inventive, eccentric and effective, this personal production line re-appropriates domestic spaces and re-purposes quotidien objects in a creation that is at once whimsical and practical. Helen Murgatroyd’s charmingly understated aims belie a serious agenda, towards a production solution that minimises material use and cost, and which really works – see for yourself.

Inspired by Royal Mail sorting offices, kitchen utensils and the ideals of cottage industries, I invent tools and workstations to allow the duplication of my drawings and images. The home kitchen meets the print workshop, attempting mass-production on a domestic scale.

Through re-claiming, recycling and employing makeshift methods, I aim for self-sufficiency. I search for low-tech solutions, relying upon everyday materials that are taken out of their existing use. Charity sales and second-hand shops have become an essential resource for me; the objects I find enjoy an extended lifecycle in the new role I give to them. Recent access to broken furniture, found in the back of an antique shop, has given me an eclectic selection of materials that would otherwise have been discarded.

My installation, Fruit Bowl Assembly Line gives new life and an alternative use to empty food tins, old fruit boxes and broken household items. This domestic set-up consists of five tabletops, each designed to make a section of a still-life image. Repetition is the subject, yet the instructions for use are designed to ensure that each picture is unique.
