Textiles holds an interesting position in the world of fashion, it is an imperative and integral part of the fashion design, it is the unsung partner, working in absolute proximity with fashion and often taking the lead in inspiring and forecasting future directions. The challenge to innovate and keep ahead of the game is the essence of design pushing the boundaries. A fashion-textile designer's longevity in the business is testament to their ability to constantly reinvent themselves and their work.
The development of the textile trade with India and China in my own field of embroidery/mixed media/constructed textiles over the last decade has changed the industry forever. Cheaply produced exquisite embroidery is now a common place commodity; it has flooded the fashion world to the point of making it invisible. In addition to this completely new change the cyclical nature of fashion dictates that the specialisms within textiles are constantly in a state of change in popularity. Now is the time for innovation in my specialism within its fashion context.
Through a series of measures since 2005 I have begun to explore the boundaries of design in the subject by the fusion of art and textiles within fashion. I wanted to create pieces that had the street cred of fashion but the fascination and interest of art. My work is often inspired by my extensive practical knowledge of the traditional skills of embroidery which very few modern designers have and I have worked in fashion for many years creating embroidery and accessories with fashion designers such as Clements Ribeiro, Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Julian Macdonald, John Rocha, Chanel, Givenchy and Matthew Williamson.
