As the title suggests, the Painting Department is in the midst of great change, moving from South Kensington to Howie Street in Battersea, and into a purpose built building for the first time in its 172-year history. The new Sackler Building will provide working spaces for 56 students, an exchange studio and visiting artist studio, along with seminar rooms, workshops and offices. The building was made possible with a major gift donated by The Dr. Mortimer and Theresa Sackler Foundation.

Before the new space is divided into painting studios, the Department is staging an exhibition of work by a selection of RCA Painting graduates, staff and visiting lecturers from the past 10 years.  Exhibiting artists include Nigel Cooke, Sophie von Hellermann, George Shaw, Turner Prize nominees Goshka Macuga and Gillian Carnegie, Varda Caivano, Paul Housley, Chantal Joffe, Phillip Allen, and Daniel Sinsel. When invited to exhibit, the artists were asked to include a piece of work that they felt represented their own practice. Alongside existing work, some artists have produced new paintings in time for the show.

Professor David Rayson, Head of Painting and his team worked closely with architects Haworth Tompkins on the building's design. This collaborative approach has ensured that the building will house some of the finest new artists’ studios available in the UK today.

We're Moving is open until 29 November followed by the
Painting Interim Show from 3 to 10 December - this includes work by current second year Painting students, some work will be for sale.
