  • 14 December 2010, 7pm: RCA Architecture Lectures – Jurgen Bey

    Jurgen Bey is one half of Studio Makkink & Bey based in Rotterdam. Along with architect Rianne Makkink their design practise has been operating since 2002, investigating the various domains of applied art while studying the tension between the private and public domain. Taking a critical stance towards the designing of public space, architecture, interiors, exhibitions and products is pivotal. Bey is a former tutor on the RCA Design Products course, he is now Director of the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam.

  • 8 December 2010: Sustain Talks III – Human Nature

    Beginning with people or with nature, how can we create a system, be it economic, environmental or social, with which people really want to engage?

    Sustainable architect and biomimicry pioneer Michael Pawlyn, evangelist for corporate social and environmental responsibility John Elkington and author and green business guru John Grant rub heads together towards a model for a human future that co-exists well with the natural world. Joe Kerr, Head of Critical & Historical Studies at the RCA, chairs a session with these three ‘future thinkers’.

  • 3 December 2010, 7pm: Orla Kiely in conversation with Professor Clare Johnston at the V&A

    Professor Clare Johnston, Head of Textiles at the RCA will be talking to RCA graduate and Visiting Professor, Orla Kiely about the inspiration behind her vibrant and playful pattern designs and the history of her signature stem and pear prints.

  • 30 November 2010, 7-8pm: RCA Architecture Lectures – Wayne Hemingway in conversation with Professor Nigel Coates

    The first of the 2010/11 RCA Architecture talks begins with designer, commentator and fashion impresario Wayne Hemingway. Founder of Red or Dead, Hemingway set up HemingwayDesign in 1999, specialising in affordable social design such as The Staiths South Bank, a housing project on Tyneside for Taylor Wimpey Homes. The Staiths has won a series of high profile awards including Housing Design Awards and Building Magazine’s “Best Housing-Led Regeneration Project” as well as a Building For Life and the highest rating of any large-scale scheme in a recent CABE audit.

  • 26 November 2010: Give Away at V&A Friday Late

    Enter into the Christmas spirit with a night of open source design events curated by students from the Design Products course. Students will be demonstrating how to make uniquely designed Christmas gifts and sharing skills such as how to build furniture and lights. Free live music and DJs.

  • 12–20 November 2010: RCA Secret

    RCA Secret is an annual contemporary art exhibition and fundraising sale consisting of original postcard-sized artworks. All cards are made and donated by professional artists, designers, illustrators, students and graduates from the College.  The 2,800 cards will be sold to the public at a one-day sale, with every postcard costing just £45, regardless of whether it has been made by a famous name or a young art student. What’s the Secret?  Each postcard is signed on the back, so collectors wont know the identity of the artist until they have made their purchase. All monies raised goes to the RCA Fine Art Student Award Fund. For further information and details of how to pre-register as a buyer visit the RCA Secret website. The postcards can be viewed on-line from 12 November but potential collectors must attend the sale day in person.

  • 17 November 2010: Sustain Talks II – Sustenance

    With a world population forecast to rise by one third in the next 30 years, how can we redesign the oil-dependent transport and agricultural systems, and the inequitable social conditions, that bring food to our table? Is locally produced food the answer?

    Architect Carolyn Steel, author of Hungry City; artist and curator Clare Patey, the power behind ‘Feast on the Bridge’; and artist and film-maker Nina Pope, with the aptly titled ongoing project ‘What Will the Harvest Be?’ share their insights into the future of our sustenance. Michaela Crimmin, Curating Contemporary Art tutor at the RCA, chairs a session with these three expert foodies with art, architecture and design – and wellbeing – at the core of their work.

  • 15–19 November: Protected Characteristics

    Protected Characteristics is an exhibition that examines themes of characterisation, categorisation and the politicisation of personal traits. It marks the coming into force of the Equalities Act which aims to eliminate discrimination against people on the basis of certain 'protected characteristic'. The exhibition is organised by the RCA Student Support office for Diversity Week. It brings together artists' responses to the Act and a commissioned installation by RCA graduate Gaea Todd.

  • 30 & 31 October: Battle of Ideas 2010

    The Battle of Ideas is a two-day festival of high-level, thought-provoking debate organised by the Institute of Ideas and hosted by the RCA for the fifth year running.  Featuring contributions from hundreds of speakers, this year’s programme puts the behaviour of politicians, bankers, educators, scientists, eco-warriors and consumers under the spotlight.

  • 22–27 October 2010: Research RCA – New Knowledge

    The first ever research exhibition will profile the work of over forty MPhil and PhD students from all departments of the College. Work ranges across art and design disciplines and embraces the applied arts, design, communications, fine art and the humanities. Testing and challenging accepted methodologies and opening new areas of investigation, often through interdisciplinary approaches, research at the RCA presents original investigation into knowledge and creativity. An open day for prospective research students will be held in the afternoon of 25 October. A series of talks and workshops led by research students will coincide with the exhibition.   • 15 October 2010: Royal College of Art Auction at Christie's

    RCA alumni, staff and honorands including David Hockney, Tracey Emin, Frank Auerbach, Bridget Riley, Paula Rego and the Estate of R.B. Kitaj have each donated an artwork to raise funds for the third and final phase of the College’s campus in Battersea, south west London. The Royal College of Art Auction will be one of the highlights in a series of art events happening in October when the international art world will gather in the capital for a showcase of exhibitions and sales, including the Frieze Art Fair. The lots will be on display from 10-14 October at Christie's.

  • 14–17 October 2010: ReachOutRCA at the Frieze Art Fair

    For the third year running, ReachOutRCA, the College's outreach team have been selected to programme the education events at the Frieze Art Fair in Regent's Park. Encompassing workshops for schools, a weekend of interactive events for families, an activity guide for young visitors and an online resource, the programme offers an accessible yet innovative experience of contemporary art for young people's learning and creativity.

  • 13–18 October 2010: Shi Shaoping: The Metamorphosis Series

    Chinese painter Shi Shaoping is to show in his first European solo exhibition at the RCA. The Metamorphosis Series, features an extensive collection of 40 of his latest works, some an impressive five metres by two. Shaoping’s work is defined by mysterious creatures which captivate the viewer. At first they look familiar but quickly they mutate beyond recognition. The artist’s Monograph, published later this year, will also be launched at the exhibition with early copies available at the show.

  • 13–14 October 2010: Art For Youth Exhibition

    This annual event has given thousands of young artists the chance to exhibit and sell their paintings, watercolours, sculpture and photographs, whilst also giving art enthusiasts the opportunity to buy affordable works by talented contemporary artists. Over 1,000 works of art valued from £200 to £3,500 are offered for sale by approximately 140 artists. Bonham’s Auctioneers conduct an auction on 13th October featuring more established artists.

  • 7 October 2010: Selling Sustainability

    The opening lecture of the Sustain lecture series, Selling Sustainability explores the question: If you want to behave and work in a socially and environmentally responsible way, is designing perfectly functional sustainable solutions enough, or do you need to design in desirability?

    Fashion designer and educator Dilys Williams, guerrilla gardener Richard Reynolds, pro-environmental marketeer Ed Gillespie and architect Ken Yeang will discuss their own personal strategies for broaching the sustainability question with different audiences, turning hearts and minds for the better.

    6–8pm, Lecture Theatre 1. Places are free. Seat bookings have now closed, limited seats are available on the day: first come, first served.

  • 1 October 2010: Designing the City: What Role for Design in London's Future?

    Today London is addressing big challenges in transport and wayfinding, housing and workplaces, the built environment and infrastructure, communications and information sharing, education and health, energy and waste. Other challenges design might address include the Big Society issues of the democratic deficit and citizen engagement. What can we learn from the past successes of design in the capital? How can it better help address London's future challenges? And can design be a major export for the UK in a globalised economy?

  • 1 October 2010: Full Steam Ahead: Innovative London Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

    As part of the citywide festival, Story of London 2010, InnovationRCA brings key creative visionaries together for a panel discussion on London’s innovative future. Chaired by Joe Kerr, head of Critical and Historical Studies at the Royal College of Art, the panel will include: Max Fordham, Founding Director of Max Fordham Partnership; Richard Seymour, Co-Founder of Seymourpowell; Erik Spiekermann, Co-Founder of Edenspiekermann and Chris Wise, Co-Founder of Expedition, and the designer and engineer behind the London Millennium Bridge. Hear these distinguished speakers discuss how innovative interventions, disruptions and achievements from the creative sector can help shape London’s future and address the wider challenges of twenty-first century urban living. Questions will be taken after the discussion.

    Sustain brings together sustainable practice from across the art and design disciplines of the RCA, in a unique exhibition that showcases objects, thinking and solutions to issues and arguments in the ever-more-complex arena of sustainability. From nutshell jewellery to life-changing solutions to global water shortages, from a mobile chai trolley to re-using textile waste to reduce landfill, RCA graduates demonstrate the 'systems'-thinking creativity of cross-disciplinary practice that is unique to the world's most influential postgraduate art and design school.

  • 23 September – 7 October 2010: RCA at the London Design Festival 2010

    The Royal College of Art presents its biggest programme of exhibitions to date as part of this year’s London Design Festival, bringing together seven exhibitions that reflect the incredible diversity and depth of innovative design thinking from the world’s most renowned postgraduate art and design university.

    The Design Products Collection – Entrance Gallery
    This exhibition launches The Design Products Collection, exclusively created by graduates and staff associated with the RCA Design Products Department and made available commercially for the very first time. The intention of the Collection is to present more widely the wealth of creative ideas within the Department.

    Sustain – Upper Gulbenkian Gallery
    Sustain brings together sustainable practice from across the art and design disciplines of the RCA, in a unique exhibition that showcases objects, thinking and solutions to issues and arguments in the ever-more-complex arena of sustainability. From nutshell jewellery to designing out packaging waste, from a livelihood-creating mobile chai trolley to re-using textile waste to reduce landfill, RCA graduates demonstrate the ‘systems’-thinking creativity of cross-disciplinary practice that is unique to the world’s most influential postgraduate art and design school.

    IDE with iGuzzini & Fratelli Guzzini – Upper Gulbenkian Gallery
    The collaboration of Innovation Design Engineering with Italian design company iGuzzini and Fratelli Guzzini resulted in two unique projects. Bin 2 Bin explores integrating cyclical sustainable materials for use in domestic consumer products. The designers had to consider sustainable materials lifecycle, consumer education, then produce a bin made from recycled materials. The second project, Space Hotel, tasked students with developing concepts for space tourists of the future, considering physical and psychological aspects such as eating and lighting in extreme micro-gravity conditions.

    The Lives of Others – Courtyard Gallery 1
    The 2010 Helen Hamlyn Research Associates exhibition will feature eleven collaborative projects led by thirteen new design graduates of the RCA, working with a range of industry, government and voluntary sector partners. The Research Associates develop live industry projects resulting in new thinking, products and services in relation to inclusive design, design for patient safety and workplace design - the three core research themes of the Helen Hamlyn Centre.

    Redesigning the Ambulance – Courtyard Gallery 2
    This collaboration between the RCA Vehicle Design Department and the Helen Hamlyn Centre supported by NHS London, shows a work in progress redesign for the interior of an Accident & Emergency ambulance.  The exhibit will feature a full size replica of the new design proposal.

    White Feast – Courtyard Gallery 3
    Seven groups of students from Innovation Design Engineering, Fashion, Textiles and Vehicle Design worked in cross-department teams to a brief set by BlackBerry® and the Helen Hamlyn Centre. The project aims to create a range of design proposals in which technology acts to significantly improve communication, with a focus on the body and lifestyle.

  • 18 September–17 October 2010: Album

    Album is an exhibition comprised of new and existing works by 17 Photography MA students. Working across the disciplines of photography, film and video, new site-specific works, which seek to respond to the particularities of the city will be produced and shown for the first time in a former textile factory as part of the Liverpool Biennial Independents. The exhibition has been curated by Morgan Quaintance, a student from the RCA Curating Contemporary Art (Inspire) course. On Saturday 18 September at 1pm there will be a curator's talk and meet the artists event in the gallery.

    The Sackler Building will be open for the public to explore as part of the Open House London weekend. This is a rare chance to have a closer look at this RIBA award-winning building – an old factory converted into the impressive home of the Painting Department.

    The only fair specialising exclusively in modern and contemporary British art.  Here you will find all the great names of 20th century art: Bacon, Freud, Frink, Frost, Hepworth, Hockney, Hodgson, Lanyon, Lowry, Moore, Nash, Piper, Riley, Scott, Sutherland and Spencer. Alongside is a large selection of work by both emerging and established contemporary artists.

  • 16 July–7 August 2010: Roman Cieślewicz Exhibition

    A major retrospective exhibition of work by one of the most influential graphic designers of the twentieth century. The show is curated by the Royal College of Art's David Crowley, Andrzej Klimowski, Jeff Willis along with Anna Grabowska-Konwent from the National Museum in Poznan and will be the first major retrospective of Cieślewicz’s work in Britain, showing over 150 key works from his diverse career.

    Organised by the Polish Cultural Institute and Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of Polska! Year.

    First year MA Curating Contemporary Art students curate the UK's premier solo show of the work of Mexican artist, writer and publisher, Ulises Carrión (1941-1989). Comprising an exhibition, series of events and publication, the project will invoke the spirit of Carrión’s practice through the activation of his provocative propositions and methodologies.

  • 4–30 June 2010: Out of Practice

    First year Ceramics & Glass students are filling the Siobhan Davies dance studios with site-specific works that respond in some way to the space, demonstrating a lively individual response, with each student bringing their own agenda. The architecture of the building is characterised by a fusion of old and new, tactility, sensitivity and attention to detail. These qualities are echoed in the objects and installations that have been realised by each student selected for the exhibition. As part of the London Festival of Architecture, the RCA students will be at the building on Saturday 19 June from 2-5pm to talk to visitors about their work.

  • 4–27 June 2010: Contort Yourself

    Contort Yourself brings together the work of three UK based artists - Harold Offeh, Jan Hendrickse and David Blandy - who twist, stretch, and reappropriate notions of the construction of the self, through performance, digital video and sound. In exploring the theme of self-realization, these works playfully critique processes of identity formation and re-formation.  Curated by first year MA Curating Contemporary Art (Inspire) students. Talks and film screenings will accompany the exhibition.

  • 28 April–2 May 2010: Oberon Book Awards Exhibition

    Annual competition for RCA students to illustrate and design a selection of covers for book titles, which this year includes Gulliver’s Travels, The God of Small Things and The Velveteen Rabbit. The exhibition includes the shortlisted entries featuring illustration, typography, photography and graphic design.

  • 27 April–2 May 2010: DRAW

    This exhibition celebrates crossovers between design, moving image, illustration and fine art at the College. Drawing is instinctive, children reach for anything that will make a mark, and make it. Yet as we grow up we seem to lose that instinct. DRAW is an exhibition of what mark-making used to mean for all of us: turning thoughts into lines. Includes work by RCA staff, as well as renowned artists such as Sir Peter Blake and Quentin Blake.

  • 19 April–25 May 2010: Trading Places

    An exhibition presenting a decade of award-winning DBA Inclusive Design Challenge Projects. The title refers to the unique process behind the Challenge model, which has seen 500 professional designers from 41 DBA member firms 'trade places' with older and disabled people in order to find new ways to design more inclusively. The exhibition is a collaboration between the Helen Hamlyn Centre, the Design Business Association and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

  • 19–22 April 2010: Man Group Drawing Prize

    Exhibition of submitted drawings to the Man Group Portfolio Prize, awarded annually by the Man Group Charitable Trust in conjunction with the RCA Drawing Studio. The RCA places drawing at the heart of every discipline in the College and this award is presented to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to an imaginative and sustained use of drawing in design and fine art practice.

    RCA Animation graduates' films will be shown alongside award-winning French and Czech animation at Ciné Lumière in the Institut Francais, South Kensington. Directors include Johnny Kelly, Joe King, Laurie Hill and Max Hattler; from France the Oscar winning Logorama will be shown and the Czech Republic is represnted by five young animators, including Noro Drziak and Michal Azbka who will attend the screenings on 18 and 20 April.

  • 23 March 2010: Fidelio in the Gulag Discussion

    The Department of Architecture presents a discussion on the architecture of set design, in relation to Fidelio in the Gulag, a site-specific opera production to be performed in the former Gulag camp, Perm 36 this July. Speakers will include the Director Michael Hunt, designer Charlotte Skene Catling and co-director George Isaakyan.

  • 19 March–13 April 2010: John Smith – Solo Show

    Curating Contemporary Art final year students have decided to present a solo exhibition as their graduate project. This will be the largest UK show by the pioneering east London based artist and filmmaker John Smith. Much loved for their wit, formal ingenuity and use of storytelling, Smith's films are influenced by the humour of Monty Python as well as the theories of avant-garde filmmaking.   • 18–21 March 2010: Last Orders

    Last Orders is an exhibition of new work by jewellery students from the RCA, Akademie der Bildenden Kunste, Munich and Hiko Mizuno College, Tokyo, at the recently opened Gallery S O. The exhibition shows the vastly differing approaches to jewellery from a contemporary group of young, international designer-makers.  Many of the students have exhibited world-wide and this will be the first time this new generation of jewellery artists will be showing work together in London as part of the international Three Schools Project.

  • 16–21 March 2010: Impact!

    The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) collaborate with the RCA Design Interactions department to create an exhibition that sees 16 designers teamed up with groups of EPSRC funded researchers from Universities across the UK. The mixed media exhibition will explore the relationship between science and society and will show how research is making a huge impact on our everyday lives, such as healthcare, crime prevention and climate change. Participating designers include Onkar Kular, Noam Toran, James Auger and Revital Cohen.

  • 5 March 2010: The 21st Reyner Banham Memorial Lecture

    Peter Reyner Banham (1922-1988) was a renowned design and architecture critic and has been regarded as one of the first design historians. This annual lecture series has been organised by the RCA/V&A History of Design department and the Design History Society since 1989. This year's lecture, American Glamour: Philip Johnson, Eero Saarinen, and Mid-Century Modern Architecture, will be given by Alice T. Friedman. Friedman is a writer and the Grace Slack McNeil Professor of the History of American Art at Wellesley College, Massachusetts, USA.

  • 26–28 February 2010: Ceramic Art London

    Ceramic Art London is the leading selling exhibition in the ceramics calendar, presented by The Craft Potters Association with Ceramic Review and The Crafts Council. The event provides a unique focus on excellence in contemporary studio ceramics based on the work of leading makers from the UK and from overseas. Royal College of Art ceramics students will be exhibiting new work along with 75 leading contemporary ceramic artists who will be selling their work. There will be a programme of talks, demonstrations and films.

  • 22–25 February 2010: Gender and Performance Exhibition and Symposium

    Contemporary artists Franko B, Oreet Ashery, Ralf Obergfell, Tony Hornecker and Ana Laura Lopez de la Torre will be participating in an exploration of gender and performance as part of the DiverseRCA programme organised by the RCA Students Union. A symposium takes place on 24 February including a public participation in Franko B’s live sculpture, and lively discussions with artists and academics.   • 9–12 February 2010: The dot at the top of an i

    Exhibition by RCA Painting students Chris Barr and Joseph Long in the Church located a short walk from the College. The artists have produced sculptural works as well as paintings that remain sensitive to their surroundings and were produced in an effort to draw attention to the Church itself.   • 22 May 2009–21 February 2010: Future Fashion Now: New Design from the Royal College of Art

    A display featuring highlights from the Royal College of Art (RCA) 2008 Fashion MA graduates' final collections.

    The display will feature 55 outfits as well as accessories and sketchbooks from 27 young designers. Divided into four sections - Concept, Form, Technique and Detail – each explores the design stages the students go through to create their final collection from their inspiration to the finished garment, and will include preparatory drawings, design boards and photographs.
