  • 10–18 December 2009: Suns Neither Rise Nor Set

    Exhibition organised by first year Curating Contemporary Art students. Features eight artists who use everyday objects, archival materials and collage techniques. These works call into question the processes through which reality and illusion are constructed in visual communication and perception. The exhibition is located in the Hockney Gallery in the Stevens Building and is accessible by appointment only. Please email: vanessa.boni@network.rca.ac.uk.

  • 10 December 2009: DiverseRCA Symposium – Perspective & Seeing

    Organised by the RCA Students’ Union and Student Support, this event is the first in a series that will look at issues of race, gender, religious belief, sexuality and age. Chaired by curator, urbanist and researcher, Paul Goodwin with guests Jack Tan (RCASU President); Phil Hutchinson (Philosopher specialising in social theory at Manchester Metropolitan University); Yara El-Sherbini (artist) and Harold Offeh (London based artist and RCA graduate).

  • 3 December–10 December 2009: Painting Interim Show

    The first exhibition of current students at the new building in Battersea goes to the second year painters. This is the first opportunity, before they begin to work in the studios to explore all that the new site has to offer as an exhibition space. This show will be an experimental and innovative overview of the current practice of painting in all its broadness, a show that defines the very purpose for this new building.

  • 13–21 November 2009: RCA Secret

    RCA Secret is an annual contemporary art exhibition and fundraising sale consisting of around 2,500 original postcard-sized artworks. All cards are made and donated by professional artists, designers and illustrators, students and graduates from the College.  The cards are sold to the public at a one-day sale, with every postcard costing just £40, regardless of whether it has been made by a famous name or a young art student. What’s the Secret?  Each postcard is signed on the back, so buyers do not know the identity of the artist until they have made their purchase. All monies raised goes to the RCA Fine Art Student Award Fund.

  • 20–29 November 2009: We’re Moving

    The Royal College of Art Painting Department are moving to a new building in Battersea. The space opens to the public with an exhibition by over 50 contemporary artists. All the contributing artists have a connection to the RCA Painting course from the last ten years, including staff and graduates such as George Shaw, Turner Prize nominees Gillian Carnegie and Goshka Macuga, Ansel Krut, Chantal Joffe, Nigel Cooke and Daniel Sinsel. The exhibition is a unique opportunity to see the range of current contemporary painting practice.

  • 23–26 October: Singularity – An Exhibition in Honour of Patric Old

    Exhibition of work by RCA graduate, Patric Old. At the time of his death, Old was an AHRC funded DPhil candidate at the Ruskin School of Drawing & Fine Art, in collaboration with the Future of Humanity Institute. This exhibition will focus on Patric's contribution to research on Human Enhancement, with his own discovery of ‘Oneness’ expressed in sometimes base, explicit, physical visual works informed by his privileged insight as a fine artist, and from working in the fashion, beauty publishing and fashion doll industries. This exhibition may contain some sexually explicit material.

  • 23–24 October 2009: C.P. Company – Goggle Jacket Past & Future

    RCA Fashion Menswear graduate Aitor Throup has designed the 20th Anniversary Edition of C.P. Company's most iconic piece - the Goggle or Mille Miglia Jacket. To celebrate both the past and future of this jacket the company is hosting a special exhibition at the RCA. The exhibition, which has been curated by Throup, features the new design as well as 20 Mille Miglia jackets selected from the C.P. Company archive.

  • 15 – 17 October 2009: Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize

    Presented by Magic of Persia, the London based charity, in collaboration with the London and Tehran- based cultural consultancy Candlestar, this exhibition presents the six finalists of the Magic of Persia Contemporary Art Prize. This is the first global award to recognise the talent of emerging Iranian artists.

  • 25 September – 6 October 2009: CLOSEUP

    The CLOSEUP show presents ten years of European design projects by the Helen Hamlyn Research Associates at the RCA (1999-2009). Curated by the Helen Hamlyn Centre, it is supported by the European Commission Representation in the UK to mark the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009.

    Exhibits will explore inclusive design, workplace design and design for patient safety. The exhibition will include the latest Research Associate projects as well as taking a look at the influence of the programme, which matches new College design graduates with external partners, over the past decade.

  • 24 September, 4pm to 6pm: The Helen Hamlyn Research Associates Symposium 2009

    Ten Research Associates will present a diverse range of projects related to the three main themes of the Helen Hamlyn Centre: Inclusive Design, Workplace Design and Design for Patient Safety. The research projects take part in collaboration with industry partners, these include Samsung, Research in Motion, BUPA and DePuy. Each Research Associate will talk about their individual projects and research findings.

  • 23 – 29 September 2009: Sunny Memories

    This show explores the future of solar cell technology and is based on collaboration between the Department of Design Products at the RCA and three other design schools – the California College of the Arts (CCA), the School of Art and Design Lausanne (ECAL) and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle in Paris (ENSCI).

    The products selected for the exhibition are grouped into three categories: designs that can move into production today, those which can potentially be produced within two to three years and those based on projections for technological progress within 10 years. Concepts include a letter box which sends an e-mail when the post arrives; a bench which lights up public parks  to make them safer; a mobile charger enabling homeless people to recharge a small radio on the street; while a fruit bowl suggests a fundamentally new way of positioning solar cells.

  • 23 September 2009: Exploring Innovation

    This one-day innovation fair for early-stage technologies marks a collaboration between InnovationRCA, Unwired Events and Inflate, the inflatable structures company founded in 1995 by RCA design graduate Nick Crosbie.

    Visitors will encounter inventors and designers face-to-face in a series of luminous inflatable pods, in order to stimulate dialogue and investment around ideas at an early stage in their development.

    Innovations by RCA students and alumni will be presented, including new Selected Works, alongside fresh ideas from the corporate labs. There will also be contributions from innovators working in the Design London Incubator, a joint initiative with Imperial College London funded by NESTA.

    Exploring Innovation is sponsored by Bene, which will furnish the pods with modern furniture classics.

  • 23 September 2009: STIR Lecture – Feeding the World, The Ultimate Design Challenge

    Three expert speakers will share their perspectives on food and farming, and how design might be a useful tool to address the challenges involved.

  • 16 – 20 September 2009: 20/21 British Art Fair

    The only fair specialising exclusively in modern and contemporary British art.  Here you will find all the great names of 20th century art: Bacon, Freud, Frink, Frost, Hepworth, Hockney, Hodgson, Lanyon, Lowry, Moore, Nash, Piper, Riley, Scott, Sutherland and Spencer. Alongside is a large selection of work by both emerging and established contemporary artists including Hirst, Emin, Grayson Perry together with others who may be the stars of tomorrow.

  • 16 September – 4 October 2009: Einfall Exhibition, Freud Museum, London NW3

    Seventeen Masters students at the Royal College of Art’s School of Applied Arts have been invited to make new work in response to the museum. Through installation, sculpture and performance, the artists challenge conventions of ceramics and glass practice, and confront our deepest fears and hidden desires. The exhibition reveals highly personal and original visual responses to the rich history and material embodied in the Freud Museum.

  • 26 June, 7 – 9pm: Friends of the Divided Mind and Performing Localities Book Launch

    Join MA Curating Contemporary Art 2009 graduates at the Royal College of Art to celebrate the publication of Friends of the Divided Mind. This catalogue is an extension of the exhibition of the same name, which took place at the RCA 18–29 March, 2009 - see here for details. The special catalogue launch price will be £5, afterwards copies can be ordered for £12 from Art Data at www.artdata.co.uk.

    At 8pm a new performance by Dora Garcìa will be presented by Office of Real Time Activity. The 60 Minute Zoom, Identification/Projection (2009), is based on a story by J.G.Ballard and is an example of real-time narrative in fiction.

    Also being launched is the free publication for Performing Localities: Recent Guatemalan Performance Art on Video, a two-day programme of talks and screenings organised by the First Year MA Curating Contemporary Art students at Iniva 5–6 May, 2009.

    The final part of the graduate shows includes work by students from the following courses: Animation, Architecture, Communication Art & Design, Conservation, Critical and Historical Studies, Design Products, Design Interactions, Fashion Footwear and Accessories, History of Design, Industrial Design Engineering, Textiles and Vehicle Design.

    Some work will be for sale.

    The graduating Sculpture students’ exhibition will be taking place in the refurbished Sculpture building in Battersea which has been highly praised for its space and light. Students will be exhibiting both large-scale work, as well as mixed media installations.

  • 5 – 8 May: Diverse RCA

    Diverse RCA is a celebration of diversity, a time to raise awareness, and to remember the importance of acceptance and respect throughout the College.

    From Tuesday 5 May until Friday 8 May there will be an exhibition of work by students, staff and recent alumni in the Seminar Rooms. The exhibition aims to provide a snapshot of the RCA's diverse community and the work it produces. A series of events and workshops has also been planned.

  • 21 – 24 April: Man Group Drawing Prize

    The Man Group Portfolio Prize is awarded annually by the Man Group Charitable Trust in conjunction with the RCA Drawing Studio. The RCA places drawing at the heart of every discipline in the College and this award is presented to a student who has demonstrated a commitment to an imaginative and sustained use of drawing in design and fine art practice.

  • 25 February: CROSS OVER

    CROSS OVER: how a new approach to architecture is inspiring a new architecture for business
    7.30pm, The Great Hall, Imperial College London, followed by a drinks reception

    In the latest of the STIR Lecture series, CROSS OVER will explore not only how a radical approach to design has inspired a new genre in the built environment, but also how this approach can be applied to designing a new architecture for business.

    Speakers include Prof. Max Fordham OBE, a pioneer of the green building movement and winner of the Design Council's major annual award, the Prince Philip Designers Prize 2008; Dr Irving Wladawsky-Berger, Chairman Emeritus, IBM Academy of Technology; Prof. David Gann, Head of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Imperial College Business School.

  • 17 February, 7pm: Xperimenta Architecture Talks: The Psycho-Geographers

    Geoff Shearcroft from AOC, London and Michele Aquila from Interaction Design Lab, Milan in conversation. Chaired by Nigel Coates.

    Under the influence of the internet and advanced communications generally, practice in architecture had to change. Fluidity and responsiveness are now the keys. Experiment as a prime value can now be seen as an ally of practice. But the real shared ground here is the city as both resource and inspiration. Shearcroft and Aquila will explore the connection between the city as they find it and the city they would like to see.

  • Wednesday 28 January, 7.30pm: STIR Lecture, Financial meltdown? What's the Big Issue?

    In the latest of the STIR lecture series speakers Nigel Kershaw, Kresse Wesling and Jonathan Robinson examine the success of the social enterprise sector. Increasingly attracting interest from a wider investment community seeking ethical investments, social enterprise generates turnover in excess of £27bn per annum, and contributes more than £8bn to GDP each year. This is a new kind of business championed by a new breed of entrepreneur: bold, business-savvy and dynamic - but also driven by conscience.

    Ghost Tank features the work of 3 RCA Painting students – Nathan Barlex, Robin Footitt and Andrew Larkin. Activating a corporeal network, which exists both in practice and vision, the exhibition takes the form of both site-specific intervention and reconfiguration of material on the picture plane.
