    MPhil/PhD Entrance Requirements

  • Printmaking welcomes applicants for MPhil and PhDs by project. Applicants will usually have an MA and/or substantial professional experience and will need a substantial body of studio work in order to make an application.

We are particularly interested in projects that explore any of the following:

    • Collage/Montage/Appropriation
    • The Archive
    • Re-Sitation – print as a social activity which could include publications and social projects
    • Digital Dialogues the changing nature of print in relation to virtual technologies.

The emphasis of our research is on the philosophical, social and artistic understandings of print rather than the purely technical. However we understand there is a strong technical interest for many of our candidates. We are currently investigating supporting Thesis-only applicants whose research has a strong interest in print history, in these cases a history of written enquiry would be necessary.

Most students begin their research degree as an MPhil with the option of transferring to PhD after the first or second year.

You are advised to make early contact with the Research Coordinator of the relevant department, to outline and discuss the development of your research proposal (see Guidelines). Please email your enquiries to Jo Stockham.
