  • Suspended from branches, draped over a bush or wrapped around the shed door handle, the Solar Lamp offers an easy alternative to the stereotypical garden-light-on-a-stick format. The connecting cable becomes a hanging loop, with six solar cells and accompanying LEDs at one end and recharging batteries at the other.

Using new transparent solar technology, the surface area of the six solar panels create the correct voltage and current for the six LEDs. Each panel is, in effect, powering and illuminating itself, making the solar panel both an essential power source and a decorative element.

Emma Caselton graduated with a BA in silversmithing, and the Solar Lamp shows a strong connection to craft, with particular reference to jewellery. These aesthetic craft influences combine with a strong interest in function to produce the final, functional product.

EPFL and Solaronix, the licensee and manufacturer of the solar technology, are currently investing in a full working prototype.

This project was produced as part of Sunny Memories.
