An inflatable, overhanging structure to shade a large city space – colourful, airy and sociable – the Solar Cloud is a pleasing contrast to urban chaos. The 'cloud' collects solar energy on a large scale, using the lightweight solar cells that are integrated into the structure, and so becomes an independent source of life, while providing vital shade to protect inhabitants from the sun.
Solar Cloud focuses on a realisation of an independent living space for countries with extreme needs in terms of energy and sun protection. In those areas in the world, all aspects of life are affected by the strong presence of the sunlight. The choice of an inflatable framework gives the structure the
necessary lightness to be installed in a city landscape or in remote
areas of the earth, where the presence of the sun makes it almost
impossible to survive.
Settled in a city landscape, the Solar Cloud could become a power generator; it would be also interesting to consider its texture and the shade it produces, as it could give a completely different feeling to the perception of the sun.
If the structure is settled in remote area, it could become the starting point for a new way of living, providing a sustainable energy source. Blocking the dangerous UV light, it would allow inhabitants the opportunity to enjoy the sunny days without being obsessed by the thought of being in a continuous danger.
This project was produced as part of Sunny Memories.
