  • My project aims were to research, write and publish a collection of innovative short fiction investigating the themes of hybrid identity in a contemporary western Europe shaped by globalization, migration and the erosion of myths about male and female "character". The form of the short stories in this anthology aim to explore a range of conceptual approaches to constructing non-linear contemporary narratives. The kinds of narrative strategies that inform the shape of these fictions are mostly concerned with how a writer handles time, memory and uncertainty. The stories represent a cultural, aesthetic and emotional enquiry into what belonging might mean in the contemporary Western world. The book explores strategies for establishing point of view, character and persona drawn from the interdisciplinary practice of a writer who works across a number of media. One of the methodologies employed here is to find language (s) for geographical and psychological rupture and fragmentation in a culture of speed, spin and twenty-four hour media. Methodologies evolved during the writing of the book include techniques to explore the limits of language and meaning and the complex structure of human experience in an increasingly hyper-technologised culture. BBC Radio 4 broadcast five of these stories to a wide audience and the book itself was published as "a Lannan selection"-which means it was regarded as an example of exceptional prose published in the English language. The Lannan Foundation (USA) describes itself as "dedicated to cultural freedom, diversity and creativity through projects which support exceptional contemporary artists and writers".
