    Survey

  • This film is a personal aesthetic 'survey' of South Wales, to map a landscape where magnificent emblematic industrial structures (windfarms, the Severn Bridge, a lighthouse, a steelworks) stand against a backdrop of great natural beauty.

The film is an architectural anthology and rhythmic study of architectural and natural structures and forms throughout South Wales. It was researched during a photographic tour of the district, using an OS map to select 'hinterland' areas that are off the beaten track for locals as well as tourists, and which are generally only encountered by chance. The static qualities of the documented spaces, with their lack of human presence and their marginal locations, are reflected in the style and structure of the work.

The film uses an unconventional animation technique developed by Joe King. It is constructed almost wholly from 35mm photographic still images, and photocopies of them, edited in digital format to preserve differences of grain, definition and form. The aim of the work was to employ a conventional animation process, as one might use 'cels', but using it to investigate the borderline between stillness and movement. The photocopied shots flatten the landscape and question the illusionistic depth of the image, making it more geometric.

Similarly, and conversely, the film constructs an illusion of movement where none exists, suggesting motion through the sequencing of the successive still shots and photographs. Joe King also composed the soundtrack, played and adapted by a musician to construct a close relationship of sound and picture. It won a MacLaren Award at the 2006 Edinburgh Film Festival and was subsequently issued on the BBC Film network internet site. It has also had screenings at venues and festivals in the UK and abroad since 2003, including Berlin, Hamburg, Ghent, Barcelona, Melbourne and in the USA (e.g. Miami, Cleveland, Washington, New York).
