My work has a convoluted relationship with reality. I am torn between a desire to expose the falsity of the image and a quest for realism.
Images of myself are central to my photographs, though they do not characterise self-portraiture in a conventional sense. I depict my body as a medium through which I comment on self/identity. By substituting my real self for a two-dimensional image, I attempt to represent myself as an object; to diminish my body’s power as an active agent and container of thought. In this sense my two- dimensional counterpart is a sacrifice for the gaze.
