The pace of development in biomedical technology is such that many theories predict a significant increase in life expectancy and birth rates within the next twenty years. As a result, Britain would experience an initial growth in older and younger populations: the least economically productive ends of the social spectrum. We speculate on an expanding built environment that is considerably affected by budgetary constraint, and where the postmillennial workhouse presents an opportunity to bypass the failing welfare system. In this community of trade, high-standard housing, education and medical treatment are exchanged for young and elderly assistance in medical research.
