Research Students should have a good first degree in Ceramics or Glass or related subject. We welcome applications from students of all ages and view both prior academic and professional practice as being valuable.
When interviewing, we give careful consideration to both the candidate and the subject being proposed. Research students need to submit a detailed outline proposal using the headings outlined in the application form. Additionally, this should address the following:
- Why the proposed research should be carried out within the Ceramics & Glass programme. Does the subject relate to the interests and expertise of this programme?
- What contribution will be made to the ceramics and glass field, and who will find it of value?
- Does it relate to, and build upon, existing work in the proposed field of study? And if so, how?
Prospective research students should discuss their proposal with the programme's Research Coordinator, Alison Britton.
- For MPhil and PhD by project, you should also submit a portfolio illustrating your prior achievements and background to the proposal. Please submit up to ten digital images of finished work or work in progress. Each main image can be accompanied by up to six supporting images of relevant preparatory work, such as drawings, sketchbook scans or contextual references that relate to the development of your proposal.
- Images must be in JPG or PNG (2MB max, and we prefer 1024 × 768 pixels or greater) format or videos in MOV, MP4 or M4V (80MB max) format.
- We would also like to see a draft bibliography and a sample of previously completed written work.
For MPhil and PhD by thesis, you should also provide evidence of preliminary
study and previously completed written work.
