Jessica’s work addresses personal identity, authorship and the ways in which these topics can be explored through performance and photography.
Referencing artists such as Cindy Sherman and August Sander, pupils discussed constructed identities in photography. Then they created their own characters in a written and drawn piece. Some came straight from the imagination, others were inspired by teachers or local characters. With the assistance of Jessica and Adam pupils dressed up in wigs and clothing, striking their poses in the studio and taking on the physical manner of their chosen persona. All the pupils entered into the spirit of the workshop, took on its clownish aspect, and appreciated the shift and construction of identities.
“[I learnt] art’s not about drawing.”
