The Culture of Design in Germany in the Twentieth Century

  • Principal Investigator: Professor Jeremy Aynsley, History of Design

    Amount awarded: £2,790

    Year of award: 2005

Currently there is no comprehensive history of German design of the twentieth century available in the English language. Certain areas of design history are well-covered in both English and German languages; for instance, the Werkbund, Bauhaus and Ulm Hochschule für Gestaltung have received extensive interpretation, and increasingly so has design in the Third Reich. By contrast, post-war Germany is still relatively overlooked and there is very little available on either GDR or FRG design traditions in the English language. Particular emphasis in this project has been to connect theoretical and philosophical writings with objects of design to indicate that this is a strong characteristic of German national design culture.
